When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?" ~Howard Ikemot
I am a more visual person than a verbal person. I think of my artwork as a visual conversation. I want to engage the viewer, but not in a loud boisterous way. Just a nice, quiet conversation.
Like any conversation, experiencing art takes at least two people. The viewer has to contribute something to the dialogue. Ideally, I want to say something that will make you think, maybe see the world in a different way. But, it’s not always a deep conversation. I will settle for a laugh. I like humor.
So, that’s what motivates me. I create something --- a painting, a sculpture, some music, even a building --- in the hope that it will engage you. Maybe it will draw you in, solicit some sort of response. That’s all.... That’s enough.... That’s everything.
